Foster City, California
Since 1999, VDK Architects has performed a wide variety of laboratory renovation and expansion projects for Gilead’s Foster City R&D campus. The nearly 250,000 sf of laboratory facilities have a combined construction value of well over $100 million. Projects range from small single-lab renovations to renovation of entire buildings.
Laboratories types have included medicinal chemistry, combinatorial chemistry, high through-put screening, drug metabolism, toxicology, X-ray labs, NMR rooms, biology and clinical virology labs, tissue culture, and BL-2 and BL-3 containment labs.
In addition to the design and construction support of the projects, VDK’s services included early-stage planning of the R&D group’s growth and expansion. Working closely with upper management to understand the Research groups’ growth needs VDK helped develop a multi-year master plan for the implementation of the projects – marrying the R&D group’s facility needs with Gilead’s corporate business plan.
